A Natural Evolution:
How to Develop Technique
Produced by Carl
Fischer Publishing on DVD and VHS, Dave Weckl's
first of three in the series "A Natural
Evolution" concentrates on explaining Dave's
"natural" approach to the drums. In his very
approachable way, with easy to understand
language and careful demonstrations using a drum
pad and the drum set, Dave explains his new
concepts of stick grip/balance, wrist technique,
and the rebound approach for both hands and
feet, tying it all in with the application of
live performances by the Dave Weckl Band
(featuring Jay Oliver, Tom Kennedy, Buzz Feiten,
and Brandon Fields). A special appearance by
Freddie Gruber enriches this educational
product.
Bonus features of the DVD include: alternate
camera angles, live concert footage from the
"Drummers Collective 25th Anniversary Concert in
New York," an exclusive interview with Dave
Weckl, including in depth discussions on the
collection of cymbals he helped create with
SABIAN (HHX EVOLUTION-see the GEAR menu!). The
DVD is also in both English and Japanese
languages. |

A Natural Evolution:
How to Practice
The second Video/DVD in the
series, "A Natural Evolution," discusses
practicing concepts, things to practice, and
applies some of the concepts learned in the
first Video/DVD. The viewer gets to see Dave
demonstrate and explain his own warm-ups, hand
and feet development, independence practice, and
other foundational types of practice. Once
again, live footage of the Dave Weckl Band is
plentiful, with additional live performances by
a special acoustic group assembled for the
video, featuring Ernie Watts (saxes), Steve
Weingart (piano), and Tom Kennedy on acoustic
bass.
For the DVD, there is bonus footage including
alternate camera angles, new live concert
footage from the "Ultimate Drummer's Weekend
2002" concert in Australia, an exclusive
interview with Dave, including in-depth
discussions on the collection of cymbals he
helped create with SABIAN (HHX EVOLUTION-see the
GEAR menu!). The DVD is also in both English and
Japanese languages. |

A Natural Evolution:
How to Develop Your Own Sound
In this very different video,
the first of its kind really, Dave explains and
demonstrates all aspects of developing your own
sound.
Beginning with how to get a great acoustic
sound, Dave walks you through his approach to
tuning the kit. He then adds the mics,
explaining the various types and their
functions, and guides you in suggested selection
and placement. Next, he shows the mixing console
and explains how frequencies, equalization and
phase cancellation can generally affect the
sound of the drums and music. He also briefly
discusses the use of dynamic processors, such as
noise gates, compressors, and reverbs. All of
the explanation is clearly demonstrated with
visual graphs and audio reinforcement.
This is the most complete sound reinforcement
instruction ever developed for percussionists.
Of course, great performances by The Dave Weckl
Band appear throughout. |

Working it Out: Latin
Percussion II
In this second video from the
Working it Out: Latin Percussion series, many
styles are covered, from reggae to various Latin
rhythms.
Included are some great solos featuring Dave and
Walfredo's unique drumset playing, integrating
Latin percussion on the drumkit. Walfredo Reyes
Sr. is one of the most innovative
drummers/percussionists out there, and has been

his homeland of Cuba).
This video, like the first one in the series,
addresses drummers and percussionists working
together.
It is a very in-depth study of rhythms from
different lands and how the two instruments can
complement each other and the music. Both videos

musical entertainment value. The video features

Jay Oliver in 1988, features an all-star band
